How music download charts work
Understand sales-based download charts, genre charts, release charts, and the limits of using chart position as a campaign metric.
Download charts help shoppers narrow a large catalog, but each store defines its own chart windows, categories, eligibility rules, and enforcement process. A position is meaningful only within that context.
Treat chart placement as a possible result of real demand, not as a product you can safely guarantee or manufacture.
What matters
- Track, release, global, and genre charts answer different questions.
- A sale can be legitimate without being eligible for every chart.
- Rank is relative to other activity in the same chart window.
- Use charts alongside buyer, DJ, and campaign-quality signals.
Sales-based does not mean simple
A sales-based chart orders eligible purchases within a store's rules. The store may remove suspicious transactions, exclude certain activity, or use different time windows. Public chart pages rarely disclose every anti-abuse detail.
For example, Beatport describes global track and release charts, genre charts, and Hype charts. Other retailers use different category systems.
Genre changes the competitive set
A genre chart compares a track with releases assigned to that category. Accurate genre selection helps the right buyers discover the music; choosing a category only because it appears easier can reduce long-term relevance.
- Check the current catalog language before delivery
- Compare arrangement and audience, not just tempo
- Ask the label or distributor how corrections are handled
Why positions move
Rank can change when your sales change, when competing tracks accelerate, when the chart window rolls forward, or when a store adjusts eligibility. A falling position does not automatically mean a campaign stopped working.
Record timestamps when reporting chart positions. A screenshot without date, chart name, and territory can be misleading.
Use a balanced scorecard
Combine chart observations with store-page visits, conversion quality, buyer geography, direct DJ replies, public support, and repeat interest. These signals are more actionable than rank alone.
